GAF 2018

Celebrating the arts

The theme this year was ‘Protest: Our voices in the world’

The Griffin Arts Festival 2018 took place from the 25 June – 6 July, and explored the theme ‘Protest: Our voices in the world’.

Any work of art, or creative act, is an act of protest: against the norm, against the ‘old ways’ and sometimes against what is quite blatantly wrong.

It is our duty as educators and protectors of the young to guide them and teach them that often, what is going on in the world is not right. The human race is a work in progress and we need their fresh eyes to reappraise and reconnect. This is what artists do. They look at the world and re-present it in ways which highlight what is not right, while making something of beauty.

This is the beginning of protest, and of making things better. Without a community of artists bringing to the fore the injustices and wrongdoings we so often take as the status quo, we might put up with them, and wait for someone else to sort out. Artists remind us there is not time to wait. There is much to fix – and celebrate! – and we’d better get to work protesting to make the world a better place.

The theme was explored across the Griffin Schools Trust not only from an artistic approach, but also from the perspective of community and science at both our Founders Day and Science Symposium last year.

London Residential

As part of the London Griffin Arts Festival, 21 Year 10 and Sixth Form students, along with members of staff from every GST school, accompanied the 100 Year 5 students to London and took part in an immersive timetable aimed at enriching their cultural understanding and broadening their artistic heritage. Due to the success of last year’s residential, this year the students and staff will be camping out at Willow Brook Primary for four days, where the school will be transformed to give a festival feeling.

GAF is currently solely funded by the schools and GST. It is through the hard work of our staff that GAF has been such a great success.

As GAF grows, we want to sustain the quality of experiences each students receives during the two weeks. By donating to GAF you are helping our students see beyond their immediate surroundings and become exposed to the wonders of classical art.
